A couple of the Crawford boys flanked me as we crossed the inner compound toward a shed about forty yards away. One of them gave my shoulder a shove and I shot him a venomous glare.
âWhat?â he snapped, and lifted his rifle. âYou got something to say?â
I knew now was not the time, but I also wanted to make sure I remembered him for when it was time. âYeah. You know the Rangers?â
He squinted, confused. âForest rangers?â
âNo. The New York Rangers. The hockey team.â
âOh. No. Er, I guess. So what?â
âJust something I learned from watching the games with my pop.â
âWhatâd that be?â
âHow to take a guyâs number.â
His confused look didnât change. Then again, maybe that was its normal resting state. âTake a guyâsââ
âShut up, Lucky,â Marv said. After Budd had said his name, I remembered where Iâd seen him before, arguing with the Chief while Shelly narrated.
My eyebrows shot up at his words. âLucky? Your name isâ¦Lucky?â
âYeah. So?â
âWhat, were you the seventh son or something?â
âYeah. So?â
I slowed my pace, surprised. My comment had been intended solely as a smart ass dig. âReally?â
âYeah, thatâs my name. So what?â
âAnd itâs really Lucky? Not a nickname for Luke or something.â
He scowled. âYou got a problem with my name, bitch?â
âNot at all. I love irony.â
He stared back at me, not sure whether I was insulting him. He had to be at least a little suspicious, though, cute little word detective that he was.
I raised my hands peacefully. âHey, whatâs in a name? I mean, it must have worked, right?â I swept my hand across the compound. This part was about the size of a city block, as best I could tell. Distance looks different in the woods than in the city. âYour family ended up with this little corner of heaven to hide out and play cowboys and Indians on.â
Lucky smiled condescendingly. âYou think youâre so smart. This ainât the whole compound. This is just the HQ. We got over two hundred acres, almost all of it fenced, andââ
Marv actually slapped him in the back of the head. âI said shut up, dumb ass. She donât need to know that.â
Lucky turned his scowl to his brother. âLike it matters anyway.â
âEverything matters,â I told him. And I got your number, motherfucker.
Marv gave my shoulder a shove, and I gave him a dirty look to match the one I showed his brother. It didnât seem to faze him as much. âMaybe in the big city you can get away with shooting your eyeballs off like that and running your mouth,â he said. âBut out here, thereâs consequences for being an uppity bitch.â
âAnd here I thought they called this the Left Coast.â
He responded with that same stupid, blinking stare, proving that he was Luckyâs natural born brother.
âMove,â he finally said, raising the muzzle of his rifle.
I moved.
When we reached the shed, Lucky shouldered his rifle and worked the combination on the lock. I watched as he mouthed the numbers and turned the dial studiously. Not a math honors student, this one.
